ABOUT US

The Glenorchy District Football Club was initially formed as the New Town Club in 1919 and participated in a junior competition. The club was then promoted to the senior ranks in 1921. In 1944 the old club system was disbanded and the club was reformed as the New Town District Football Club. This is where the Magpie spirit was born. In 1957 the club changed its name to the Glenorchy District Football Club and moved to King George V oval in the heart of Magpie territory.

Since the introduction of district football the senior premiership tally stands at 14. In fact the Glenorchy senior team competed in a record 13 grand finals between 1975 and 1988 only missing out in 1981.The Reserves teams have also figured prominently over the years with five premierships in a row from 1957 and 1961 and back to back wins in 1992 and 1993 then 2001 and 2006. The senior team’s most recent Grand Final appearance was in 2006 where they lost to arch rival Clarence.

With the collapse of the state wide league (SWL) at the end of 2000 Glenorchy along with the other SWL clubs had to find a new competition. Eventually Glenorchy were accepted in to the Southern Football League but were required to change from the traditional Black and White due to a clash with another club. Thus the Glenorchy Storm was born with colours of green, black and white. Following the split of the Southern Football League into premier and regional leagues Glenorchy retuned to it’s traditional black and white in 2004.
